The .223 Remington is a sporting cartridge loaded with a .224 Inch diameter, jacketed bullet. The .223 weighs between 40 to 90 grains, the most common being 55 grains. It was developed as an enlarged, higher velocity version of the .222 Remington, introduced in 1950 as a varmint cartridge. .223 Remington ammunition is among the least expensive centerfire calibers, often used by target shooters, particularly in the high power rifle.
The .223 Remington is most common in two types of rifles…
- Varmint Rifles, bolt action, with a 1 in 12 rifling twist.
- Semi-Automatic, such as the AR-15, with a 1 in 9 rifling twist.
